The presenter will be Tales of
Enchantment: Utilizing Metaphors in Hypnotic Practice
Presenter: Carol A. Hicks (Lankton) , M.A.,
LMFT
Carol Hicks will present an overview of therapeutic metaphors
with indirect suggestion as a modality of communication to retrieve
experiential resources in hypnotherapy. Participants will learn how to
construct goal oriented metaphors that are organized in a multiple embedded
framework. Hypnosis will be emphasized as the modality for delivering these
therapeutic stories. Course content is inspired by Milton H. Erickson and
described in Carol's books: 'The Answer Within' and 'Tales of Enchantment.'
Therapeutic goals include retrieving affect, challenging limiting beliefs, and
illustrating desired behavior. Therapists learn to help clients create an
associative link such that beneficial emotions, solution supporting attitudes,
and novel behaviors become available to them in the context where they are
needed. Therapists will learn how to encourage clients to mentally rehearse
handling upcoming situations in a way that incorporates these resource
experiences through self image thinking. Working knowledge of hypnotic
induction is presupposed.
This workshop is excerpted from Carol’s 40 hour training in which participants
learn the comprehensive clinical framework of a strategic Ericksonian approach
featuring utilization, interpersonal diagnosis, treatment planning with
identification of specific affect – attitude – and behavior goals, protocol for
creating metaphors specific to each type of goal, the multiple embedded
metaphor framework, ten categories of indirect suggestion, ambiguous function,
paradoxical and skill building assignments, and strategic use of trance
phenomena for pain management and trauma resolution. This 5 day workshop along
with her 10 hour introduction to hypnosis prerequisite workshop will next be
offered in Pensacola, Florida the week of June 20-26, 2011.
Objectives: At the conclusion of the workshop, participants will be able
to:
- Construct
therapeutic metaphors designed for affect retrieval, attitude change, and
behavior illustration.
- Use indirect
suggestion categories at strategic points within the stories in order to
punctuate and deepen relevant personal experience.
- Create an
associative link via self image thinking whereby the client ‘owns’ and
mentally rehearses resource experiences in desired context.
- Organize several
different goal oriented metaphors into a multiple embedded framework.
